Authentic Indian Dal Tadka Using Gavyamart's Bhadhva Ghee

Ingredients:

  • For the Dal:
    • 1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
    • 3 cups water
    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • Salt to taste
  • For the Tadka (Tempering):
    • 2 tablespoons Gavyamart's Bhadhva Ghee
    • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
    • 2 dried red chilies
    • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
    • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
    • 4-5 garlic cloves, finely chopped
    • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
    • 2 green chilies, slit
    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
    • 1 teaspoon garam masala
    • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
    • Juice of half a lemon

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Dal:
    • Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear.
    • In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt. Close the lid and cook on medium heat for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and fully cooked.
    • Once the pressure releases naturally, open the lid and mash the dal lightly with a ladle. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Tadka:
    • In a pan, heat Gavyamart's Bhadhva Ghee over medium heat.
    • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
    • Add dried red chilies and sauté for a few seconds until they darken slightly.
    • Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
    • Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté until the raw smell of garlic and ginger disappears.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
    • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  3. Combine Dal and Tadka:
    • Pour the cooked dal into the pan with the tadka. Mix well to combine.
    • Adjust the consistency of the dal by adding water if needed. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes on low heat.
    • Add garam masala and mix well.
    • Turn off the heat and add lemon juice. Stir to combine.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice or roti, and enjoy the rich flavors enhanced by Gavyamart's Bhadhva Ghee.
